Case Worker/Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist — CASASTART (Exempt)

The primary role of the CASASTART Caseworker is to provide prevention and intervention strategies engaging eligible/high-risk youth to reduce their exposure to alcohol/drugs and criminal activity by delivering enhanced case management services. Program components include: social support/intensive case management, family services, educational services, afterschool and summer activities, mentoring, incentives, community policing and enhanced enforcement, and juvenile justice intervention.

The CASASTART Caseworker will serve five District Offices and one Satellite Office within the Boston Metro Region.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain mutually respectful, long-term relationships with clients and their families
  • Assist DYS Casework Staff in ensuring family engagement during community placement and, when appropriate, provide time specific, direct family contact for reducing revocation events
  • Meet with DYS caseworkers to identify possible CASASTART clients
  • Perform intake interviews and needs assessment.
  • Assist with the development of the clients’ Individual Service Plan
  • Design and implement individualized youth development strategies to ensure that prescribed support services are provided to clients in a logical, timely and effective manner
  • Identify resources and establish a referral system within and among community agencies designed to support youth and families
  • Make appropriate referrals for services determined in needs assessment and ongoing involvement with youth
  • Maintain proper and complete documentation of all meetings, releases, referrals and other paperwork
  • When necessary, transport clients in a safe manner
  • Provide client advocacy
  • Coordinate recreational activities for clients
  • Participate in weekly team meetings to discuss progress towards goals and to modify ISPs as needed
  • Maintain all required documentation such as previous and current services provided, progress notes, referrals, assessment and follow-up for review
  • Prepare and submit monthly and quarterly statistics, narrative, and activity reports as needed
  • Provide enrollment and disenrollment data via Virtual Gateway BSAS ESM system
  • Assist with conducting community outreach by planning and executing social and educational events and outings in conjunction with Resource Development Specialist
  • Make home visits at least once per month
  • May consult with DYS Director of Substance Abuse Specialist for programmatic supervision

Qualifications Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree in counseling, psychology or related field
  • Master’s Degree preferred
  • Minimum two years of professional experience working with adolescents, families and /or substance abuse issues 
  • Microsoft Office skills
  • Must be able to handle multiple tasks and to meet deadlines in a timely fashion
  • Ability to work with a culturally diverse population
  • Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Must possess strong organization and interpersonal skills
  • Must be able to work independently
