Sandra McCroom,
Executive Director

Sandra M. McCroom was born and raised in the state of Ohio. After graduating from high school, Sandra went on to get her BA degree from Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia. Sandra received the honor of delivering the “Senior Class Address” at her 1990 Spelman College Commencement Ceremony. After graduation, she spent nearly three years as a volunteer in the United States Peace Corps. Sandra served as a Peace Corp Volunteer in Thailand working for the Ministry of Interior of the Royal Thai Government. She wrote a project proposal, received, and managed funds for the design and construction of a childcare center in a rural Thai village.

In May of 1994, Sandra, with nothing more than a backpack full of clothes, moved to Boston to work for Roxbury Youthworks, Inc. (RYI) as a Case Manager. Sandra managed case files for juvenile offenders who participated in the employment and training program. From June of 1997 to December of 1997, Sandra served as Assistant Program Director for Volunteers of America until she received a call from the Massachusetts Office of the Attorney General and became the Senior Development Coordinator for the Safe Neighborhood Initiative, under Attorney General Scott Harshbarger.

While working at the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office, Sandra’s duties included managing 33 Safe Neighborhood Initiative programs, and sub-contracted programs across the Commonwealth. While supervising staff and overseeing the efforts of Safe Neighborhood Initiative collateral partners; she also wrote and managed state and federal grant proposals for the AG’s office. Sandra sought to bridge relationships between community residents and the government, provided assistance to other cities and states working to develop similar partnerships, supported community development and neighborhood revitalization efforts and abandoned property projects across the state.

In September of 2000, Sandra returned to Roxbury Youthworks, Inc. as the Executive Director. Ms. McCroom has a true passion for the moral and social obligation we all have, to nurture our youth to become healthy and productive citizens. As Executive Director of RYI Sandra works to continue the organization’s 20-year history of providing innovative support and wrap-around services to court-involved and other youth and their families in the greater Boston area. It is her personal and professional commitment to build a better community, one child and one family at a time.
